Turmeric bagels

The smell of fresh baked bagels is unforgettable. Today’s recipe is a simple variant of these delicious treats, with a turmeric touch.


500 g strong flour

7 g dried yeast

1 tsp sugar

2 tsp salt

1 tsp turmeric powder or 7-10 g fresh turmeric, grated

350 ml warm water

Sesame seeds or your favorite seeds to sprinkle on top


2 l water

1 tsp baking soda

In a small bowl mix the yeast, sugar and 100ml warm water. Leave it aside for 7-10 mins.

In a big bowl sift the flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture, turmeric and add half of the remaining water. Mix with a wood spatula or your hands, then continue adding the remaining water.

Knead until the dough feels smooth and elastic, about 10 mins. Put the dough in a bowl and add some oil, cover with plastic wrap and leave in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 220 C and prepare a baking tray with parchment paper.

Divide the dough into 6 – 8 pieces and shape each piece into a ball and use make a hole in the middle of each ball. Cover the bagels with plastic wrap.

Bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the baking soda. On very low heat, add each bagel into the water and keep it 1 – 1.30 mins, turning over

Remove and drain away any excess water. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and bake for 20 – 25 mins or until golden and crisp.

Leave to cool on and serve with your favorite filling.
